What is ss san francisco?

SS San Francisco was a steam-powered cargo ship built in 1914 as part of the Pacific Steamship Company's fleet. It was originally used to transport passengers and freight between San Francisco and the Hawaiian Islands. In the years leading up to World War II, the ship was converted to a troop carrier and was used to transport soldiers and equipment to various locations in the Pacific.

On November 2, 1943, while carrying troops and supplies from San Francisco to Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, the SS San Francisco was hit by a Japanese torpedo. The attack caused significant damage to the ship and killed over 100 soldiers and crew members. Despite the damage, the ship managed to make it back to the port of Espiritu Santo for repairs.

Following the attack, the SS San Francisco was repaired and used for several more years before being retired in 1947. The ship was eventually sold for scrap and dismantled in 1959. Today, the memory of the SS San Francisco and the soldiers and crew who lost their lives on it is commemorated at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco.
